There is a welcome passion with our modern culture to promote the concept of ‘Back to Basics’ within our toys and games for children. That besides the progressive development of technology and social trends, parents and specialists have acknowledged the vast selection of toys presented to children are not encouraging or engaging enough to meet the natural requirements and expectations of child development. This should not be considered a fad or gimmick, but a genuine assessment of why children play, how they play, and what they benefit from when they play.
Any parent can acknowledge the natural spark of excitement when a child takes a few items of household bottles and boxes and tapes/glues them together and is not only thrilled by the achievement but is equally convinced that they have made the ultimate spaceship, or dollhouse, cash register or veterinary clinic.
We know that this activity is NOT because a child may not have enough toys, as this passion is found in any child regardless of how many toys they have.
It is the very notion of why children play – imagination. A child naturally craves to use their imagination, and we should never underestimate the value a large empty box can give a young mind! Yet this is the real responsibility of a presented toy, to offer a balanced challenge to a young mind, by providing an activity that promotes imaginative creativity but with a limited sense of restriction, forcing the child to use compromise and meeting the challenge of the materials around them.
This is what Kardtects attempts to offer. Every card is the same size, and so creates a challenge for a young mind – a child has to either adjust their build to accommodate the size, or be inventive in how they use the cards. In addition, the designs on the cards a specifically designed to offer both a chance of creating easily recognizable architectural designs, but also uniform enough to allow children to think ‘outside of the box’ – even by using the reserve of the cards to build their own designs – like spaceships – that’s Back to Basics, and we love it.
