Building card houses guides children to discover, learn and grow. Kardtects is one of the best back to basics toys for kids.
One of the key meanings to ‘Back to Basics’ is not simply the importance for the versatility of toys to stimulate imagination and creativity, but also that the phrase relates to highlighting the very basic, but vital, essential skills they support and develop in children.
Things that we may assume are instilled in us by nature, but are actually concepts that need to be experienced and taught, normally through exposure, come from play. Possibly the most perfect example of this is an individual’s ability to focus and be patient.
This human element could be easily regarded as truly instinctive, that someone is just simply ‘focused’ or ‘patient’, but is in reality due to our experiences as children.
Our educations helped build and value these characteristics. Did we, as infants, learn to be focused, which thus gave rewards and encouraged our desires? Did we learn to be patient, and found it beneficial, and so found it a bonus?
Indeed, as parents, guardians and childcare providers, we can actively and directly support a child to appreciate these virtues. But a more basic and deeper appreciation of these comes before we engage. It comes when a child plays with a toy and how they deal with the consequences of that play.
With so many modern toys offering a standard, almost timed interactive response to a child engaging with it, the test of focus and patience is neither challenging or presented. It is only toys and activities that purposely engage with a child’s desire to play and grow that they get to experience these aspects on their own, and to their own special and specific time to relate to them.
For example, in the very early stages of a children learning to play, they don’t even recognize the concept of failure. Their imagination is so focused on what they want to achieve. With the balancing of cards to build their house design, the first step is simply to place them together. Yet if done without focus the cards will fall over. The design of the child to succeed makes them focus, and then to be patient, and gain the reward of then achieving their goals.
It’s a delightful thing to see the inherent sense of achievement in a child. As parents we are well aware of that sense of pride they express when they feel they have succeeded in accomplishing a task and rush to tell us. As such, to support these positive experiences, we instinctively praise them, to support this display.
