When describing a castle’s landscape, one of the most popular features mentioned is its moat. The moat is the wide, deep ditch surrounding the castle. It is usually filled with water, but doesn’t always have to be. Sometimes wooden stakes and other deterrents are placed inside moats.
The moat was an important element to include when building a castle. It protected inhabitants of the castle from intruders and attack. Anyone attempting to raid a castle was slowed and made highly vulnerable by a moat’s hurdles. It proved to be an excellent barrier and offered added safety for those living inside the walls of a castle.
One of the fun facts about a moat is its name originated from Motte, which actually refers to a mound; the opposite of what a moat or ditch is. When building early castles, the earth would be excavated to form a large hill with steep sides to build a castle on. The earth removed to build the motte (mound), created a ditch. The method to build a motte later became known to refer to the ditch itself, or the moat. Isn’t it amazing how words come to be?
In Kardtects expansion packs are found collectible building cards of water. These can be placed around a Kardtects Castle to create a moat. Using other collectible building cards from expansion packs, a bridge across the moat, with trees and torches lining the entrance can be added. This makes for an impressive card house and scene.
