In 2002, news began to rapidly spread that more deaths are caused from falling coconuts than deaths caused by Shark Attacks. The number given for death by falling coconuts was around 150 people per year; 10 times the number for shark attacks. This supposed fact continues to be quoted today. But is it true?
Although people have died from falling coconuts, the number is not near that high. An actual death rate has not been factually calculated and varies greatly depending on location. Obviously, only where coconut palm trees grow can there be deaths caused by falling coconuts.
The story of 2002, which continues to be believed and repeated, was based on only one study in an area where numerous coconut trees existed, and 4 injuries had happened, 2 of those being fatal. This number was then exaggerated to include all areas where palm trees grow, and so a supposed ‘fact’ was born.
Even though a thorough study for actual deaths from falling coconuts hasn’t been conducted, it is not believed to be any where near that high of a number. However, it is still wise to be careful while walking under coconut trees!
