In a previous Friday Fun Fact, Kardtects shared why Jungle Huts are often built on stilts. The reason being to not only protect from flooding, but to mainly protect from the thousands, most likely millions, of vermin and insects that creep across the jungle floors at night. One of these pests that the stilted home helps keep from being infested by is the Cockroach.
Even saying the word, Cockroach, makes many people shiver with disgust. But this isn’t the case to all. In some cultures they make tasty snacks and are often farmed to provide their nutritious value to others. They can be boiled, fried, baked, and even eaten raw. Would you eat a Cockroach?
Below are some other interesting and fun facts on Cockroaches for you to either get more disgusted by, or grow a better tolerance to.
*Cockroaches can easily stay underwater, and not die, for a good 30 minutes or more.
*Cockroaches can still breathe, and live, even if their heads are cut off. They would eventually die from lack of food and water.
*Some Cockroaches can get as big as 3 to 4 inches long!
*Although often thought to live in only warmer climates, there are some types of Cockroaches which live in the Artic and very cold climates.
*There are around 4600 different kinds of Cockroaches living all over the Earth
*Some Cockroaches make hissing sounds, while others like to make chirping sounds
Not sure if any of those facts helped you appreciate Cockroaches more, but even if you like Cockroaches, it’s best if you are going to live in a Jungle to build your house on stilts. This will help keep them from spreading germs and bacteria throughout the home.
Here is video on how to build a card house on stilts. Have fun! (And can you spot the Destroyer during the video?)
